Sir Derek Jacobi is one of two actors that have been knighted twice. He will be celebrating his 70th birthday October 22, 2008. He has to his credit many superb performances in supportive roles. He is Cadfael (1994-1997), the murder solving monk set in the middle ages which aired on BBC. He starred as Claudius in Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet pictured here. Immediately above is his outstanding confessional scene. Other films include Gladiator and Gosford Park. I have read that he is a humble man. He is definitely one of my favorites.

I loved him as the shady antiques dealer in "Dead Again". A very versatile actor who can play character roles in any period piece.
Good morning Lavinia,
It is almost noon here in Indiana. I will have to find "Dead Again". I don't know that movie. I love period movies.
I've enjoyed Jacobi's performances in anything I've seen. From the first thing I remember seeing him in ages ago, well, not quite —
1976's "I Claudius" to the most recent one I've seen, which is "Gosford Park." I think I need to check out some more of his work.
Thank you for visiting my humble blog today!
Jacobi is wonderful. LL, I also think he is great in "Dead Again" with Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson, also among my faves.
PS~~Your sidebar pix are wonderful! I want a piece of that yummy looking choc cake. :P
Good evening...Hope your trip was a good one.
I also recommend "Dead Again." Jacobi is wonderful in that role and the movie is terrific.
I love your post on Atonement. I posted about it over at the Tea Society a while back. That was one of the most stirring movies I've seen in ages.
Thank you for adding me to your links!
Rebecca and Vee,
Thanks for visiting me this evening. Well, I must say "Dead Again" is a must. Where was I when this was out? Probably in la la land. I go there quite often to recoup. Yes, Atonement really surprised me at the end. You two have a great week. :)
Willow,
Oh wow! "Dead Again" has Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson too? Oh my gosh... I'll probably go on to amazon.com and order. Thanks for the info, your nice comments, and your visit. :)
I see you've listed The Talented Mr. Ripley as one of your favourite films. It is one of mine, too. I enjoy watching it 2 or three times a year; everyone is so perfectly cast, but I believe the real star of the film is the gorgeous Italian scenery and settings. From Venice, to Rome, to spectacular coastal backdrops, Italy of the 1950s really shines in this film. Have you read the book? It's a gem.
Dead Again also stars the wonderful and - in my opinion - under-rated Andy Garcia. There are black and white segments, and those in full colour. I will say no more as spoilers are very bad things indeed.
I love Derek Jacobi too - I've seen him a couple of times live, most recently a few years ago in Kean, based on the life of the great actor. As for films, I think among my favourites has to be Little Dorrit (in two parts). If you don't already know it, it's a revelation. The brilliant Christine Edzard directed, and what she created was a Dickens world that seems much closer to the reality of what it might have been that some of the more sanitized film versions. I remember the scene early in the first film, when Jacobi's character has returned to his family home and is going to bed. You can almost smell the damp of the sheets. The clothes are not sparkling clean, the faces are not all powdered, the hair is not freshly shampooed or - heavens - layered carefully. It's real and moving and epic, and I really recommend it! (Was that subtle enough a rave? Hee hee)
I am enjoying your blog enormously!
