Swashbucklers

The word "swashbuckler", generally describes a protagonist who is heroic and idealistic to the bone and who rescues damsels in distress. His typical counterpart is dastardly villain. There is a long list of swashbucklers who combine outstanding courage, swordfighting skill, resourcefulness, chivalry and a distinctive sense of honor and justice, as for example The Three Musketeers, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Robin Hood, and Zorro. The genre has, apart from swordplay, always been characterized by influences that can be traced back to the chivalry tales of Medieval Europe, such as Robin Hood and the King Arthur legends

I enjoy watching and clowning around acting like a swashbuckler.  While growing up we used to take the slats out of an old babybed up stairs and play as though they were our mightly swords.  We used to put on the music (of which I can't think of right now) and swashbuckling to our hearts content.

WT of Willow Manor gave me a couple of fencing swords he brought back from Old Europe which I now enjoy displaying them on our living room wall.  One of the finest sword fighting scenes is from the 1995 movie, "Rob Roy" starring Liam Neeson and Tim Roth in the thrilling final climatic fight to the finish.  Unfortunately, I was unable to make a copy of the scene due to MGM rights reserved.

Love the swords! And the song you played when you were young was called "Sabre Dance". I remember Tess talking about it at one time : )

I have fond memories of the old swashbuckling movies.
There is something wonderful in that kind of hero.

Errol Flynn personifies the swashbuckler. I quite expect he made films of all the tales you mention.

I don't think that scene with Fairbanks Jnr. sword-fighting his way up and down a massive staircase around 1940 something can ever be beaten. Can't remember the name of the film, though - was it the Pimpernel?

Cro and Tom,
Yes those movies of Errol Flynn and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. in the late 1930s did personify swashbuckling at its best. Thanks for your comments :)

We did the same as children, my bro and I...we played with light sabers, depicting fight scenes between hans solo and darth vader, but still sword fights :)
